In addition to the numerous measures already implemented to protect passengers and staff during the current coronavirus crisis, the Lufthansa Group has confirmed that it is not always possible to maintain the required physical distance of 1.5 meters when flying. They are therefore asking passengers to use a face mask on all travels with Lufthansa.

The Airline Group, which resumed flights in May 2020, has asked all passengers to use masks to cover their mouth and nose during their stay at the airport as well as onboard. All Lufthansa Group cabin crew with direct customer contact will also be wearing appropriate protection.

Airports that can reliably maintain the required physical distance are exempt from this rule. Lufthansa is following the official regulations of many European countries, who have made the wearing of face masks mandatory in public.

Passengers are kindly requested to bring their own face mask and, for the sake of sustainability, they recommend a reusable cloth mask, though passengers may use any type of face covering, such as simple disposable masks or even scarves.

For now, wearing a face mask remains mandatory until August 31, 2020. You may find further information on face coverings and other hygiene measures at the website of the Robert Koch Institute.

Lufthansa Group’s recent provision of free adjacent seats in Economy and Premium Economy class no longer applies, as covering your mouth and nose provides sufficient protection to your health. However, due to the current low seat load factor, seat assignments will be spaced apart as much as possible throughout the cabin. In general, infections remain highly unlikely on board a plane. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, there has not been any known case of infection onboard a Lufthansa Group flight. The air on all Lufthansa Group aircraft circulates vertically, and, in addition, they are equipped with high quality air filters that ensure an air quality similar to that of an operating room.
