The Solis Spa at Lough Eske and the Croghan Man

The Solis spa is serene. Nestled at the water's edge of Lough Eske, near the famous Blue Stack Mountains, Lough Eske Castle's Spa sets forth an exhilarating destination for discovery. Here, the concept of the traditional spa break in Ireland goes beyond simple manicures, facials, or massages. Instead, the focus is on a total wellness experience. Situated in the castle garden, the setting is authentic, refreshing and peaceful in the former greenhouse of the original castle. Its beautiful sandstone and rich wood floors reflect the natural beauty of the sylvan surroundings.

The Solis Spa has seven Treatment Rooms, including two couples treatment rooms with Jet Bath and Steam Room, a fully equipped thermal Suite, a Fitness Centre which offers a range of cardiovascular and strength training options, as well as state-of-the art equipment and a 17m swimming pool. However, what makes the Solis Spa at Lough Eske unique is its ÓGRA skincare - Ireland’s original peat skincare range founded by Bill Kenny. ÓGRA is an Irish word meaning youth.

It all started in 2003 when a body was recovered from a bog about five miles away from where Bill lives. The body was 3,000 years old and had been preserved by the peat. It became known as the Croghan Man.
A few years later on a flight to Budapest Bill came across a book called ‘Peat in Balneology & Therapy’ (Balneology: Therapeutic use of spring waters or mineral waters). As Bill read through the pages his mind began to explore the idea of how he could use the peat from his own bog. He thought to himself, if peat can preserve a prehistoric body, what could it do for a living person?

He couldn’t wait to return home and get the peat tested to see if it was suitable for use. It transpired that it had all the properties ideal for skin care. So ÓGRA was born.

The fact that it preserves means it is anti-aging, but it also has healing properties that help with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Bill and his family’s enthusiasm never faltered and they worked hard for a number years to create ÓGRA. The products were finally ready to be shared with the rest of the world, so ÓG Ireland was launched in November 2009. Already, the results from using ÓGRA products have captured the imaginations of beauty experts, celebrities and clients alike.

Natural peat has been used in cosmetic and skincare for generations. The rejuvenating benefits come from the abundance of essential oils, fatty acids and lipoids in the peat. These penetrate the skin, re-establishing the natural pH balance and encouraging blood flow.

Healing properties are also recognised, as the harmful positive ions in the skin tissues are exchanged for the rejuvenating negative ions in the moor peat. The peat contained in the bogs has amazing preserving properties which contribute to its ability to both combat aging and enhance health. Peat has excellent moisture-retaining qualities which improves skin elasticity.

Inspired by this, ÓGRA have created a skincare range that is second to none.

Complementing the spa is a Luxurious accommodation, superbly impeccable service; long walks through mystical woodlands or moments of quiet reflection in a secluded garden; a gourmet meal, featuring the freshest local ingredients, accompanied by a great bottle of wine.

Spa Solis in Donegal offers a wonderful escape to a world of well-deserved pampering and natural restorative therapies.
