Santa Caterina – The Angelic Beauty on the Amalfi Drive
The angelic white lounge of Santa Caterina, Amalfi

There are many reasons why one would visit the Amalfi on the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Province of Salerno in Southern Italy, however, if one of the reasons for your visit is to enjoy sublime peace and pampering in idyllic surroundings, then the picturesque Santa Caterina which sits on the famous Amalfi drive, just a stone throw away from the town will be just “what the doctor ordered”.

As a writer and lover of everything alluring, Santa Caterina in Amalfi is a perfect and inspirational hideaway for me. Clothed in angelic white, Santa Caterina enjoys a panoramic coastal setting of incomparable beauty and has been a dream home to many dignified celebrities. Several dignitaries including Hilary Clinton have made Santa Caterina their home away from home.

I was especially enchanted by the courteous, warm reception and remarkable service displayed by the staff throughout my stay – exactly what one expects from a property of this calibre.

On arrival, you are greeted by an all-white hand-painted floral marble and lapis flooring with beautiful green climbers and creepers to match – this is where you fall in love with the gardener.

The property begins on the Amalfi’s drive and tumbles down to the water on a series of landscaped natural terraces. Elevators and scenic garden paths transport guests past citrus groves and gardens to the seaside level, which includes a sea water heated swimming pool, sunbathing decks, a small gym, café/bar and open-air restaurant.

History has also been kind to this special “Mediterranean style” resort. In 1850, Giuseppe Gambardella constructed the original structure; then Crescenzo Gambardella, his son, redesigned it in 1904, constructing the original six guest’s rooms. Following that, two generations of Gambardellas have improved the hotel, bringing the resort to its present 67 guest’s rooms and Suites. Today, Crescenzo’s daughters, Giuseppina Gambardella-Gargano and Carmela Gambardella-Camera, assisted by their respective children – Crescenzo Gargano, Alessandro and Beatrice Camera - directly manage the day-to-day operations of the hotel and take personal interest in the comfort and enjoyment of the resorts guests.

It is complemented by steam bath, sauna & Scottish Hydrotherapy Shower facilities. The use of the spa is by reservations only

On offer are 67 luminous rooms and suites with terraces, balconies, large windows with a view on the Amalfi Coast or garden. 37 are standard, superior and deluxe. There are also 13 junior suites, executive junior suites and senior deluxe suites located in the main

building together with 17 additional accommodation made up of garden suites, deluxe rooms and villas. All the rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, direct dial telephones, voice mail, WIFI, satellite colour TV with DVD player, minibar, safety box.

Food and Drink at Santa Catarina:
Service at Santa Catarina’s two restaurants are divine and breakfast on the terrace at sunrise is refreshing. The Terrace setting overlooks the sea and the all white surrounding with a lush year-round display of flowering bougainvillaea brings the breath-taking outdoors into the dining room.

From early-May to late-October, lunch is served on a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea and pool. The regional menu includes wood-fired oven pizzas, seafood-sauced pastas, grilled local fish and buffalo mozzarella grilled in the hotel’s own lemon leaves.

Meals are served either à la carte or by the Chef’s recommendation for the day. Guests can also enjoy drinks and refreshments on the adjoining sea view terrace, while those who prefer to dine in the privacy of their own terraces may order from room service.
